Something is wrong. That's about all I know from your description. To get more detail I need the codes that are stored in the computer. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer. Get the numbers, the description is less important.

Any possibilities
It could be that the range sensor is bad or the pigtail is corroded or one of its wires has worn the insulation off.
Or one of or both of the speed sensors in the 4R100 has failed.
When these failed on my truck, it drove like the fuel lines were froze or starving for fuel while the OD off light flashed...
Getting a good scan is the best way.

Mine started doing this during our trip last week. We did some googling and some places said something work g with the tranny. Others said it can do this when towing heavy sometimes.
