We checked our 2019 F350 Lariat Ultimate and the tailgate will not come open unless it is park, during normal operation. However all bets are off if water gets into the connections at the spare tire. Need to get some dielectric grease. Any ideas where and how much?
Bill
For sure the connectors near the spare tire. I'm not sure you can put too much grease in. If it squirts out and makes a mess it _might_ be too much.

Too funny. How many times did someone say that about air conditioning, power steering, power brakes or automatic transmissions in the years gone by? 'Nuff said I suppose.
This will most likely lead to a fix and a recall.....
Mine dropped yesterday - I'm pretty sure its when I release the parking brake. If the doors are locked and or truck in gear the gate will not drop.
I need to figure out how to get inside and disable the dash button. I doubt its the key fob in the pocket getting bumped as it takes 2 depressions to open via the key fob.
You guys should report this on nhtsa - then maybe there will be an offical recall.
The tailgate opening has happened to me with my 2017 F250 Platinum, purchased in Nov 2017 with only 4753 miles on it (manufactured Aug 2017). I was towing my toy hauler trailer for the first time with this truck when the tailgate dropped on three separate occasions. Unfortunately, this caused damage to the tailgate. I called Ford Corporate Customer Service and they told me that I have to take it to the dealer to get it diagnosed and as long as it is a warranty issue they would cover the repair. So now I'm trying to recreate the issue before I take it in to the dealer. Lots of good info on this thread and I'm bringing the TSB with me when I go to the dealer. I also submitted a complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Wish me luck and I'll keep you posted.
A NHTSA official did get back to me several months ago and I didn't think anything more of it until today, I see this:
"Dealers will fix the tailgate frame wiring harnesses and install a new tailgate handle release switch. Owners will be notified by male during the week of Jan. 20."
Does he come to my house? Will he show up to my work? Is he nice, or mean? And why can't a woman deliver this news?

No matter the gender, let's hope "he" can find us. 🤣👍 I expect to get reimbursed for the repairs to my truck because of this issue.
I hope he can find me in Phoenix. In the 2.5 years mine has popped open 5 times. Twice while towing my trailer. Pretty damn scary when rolling down the highway and hear it open.
I have had this happen to me several times now. The first time we were on a trip with all of the luggage in the back and almost lost some of the bags before another driver flagged me down about it and the second time I was towing the 5th wheel and luckily caught it before I turned. Just recently I lost one of those 5 gal VP fuel jugs about 1/4 full on a short drive somewhere.
Now I am not certain that the tailgate button on the fob didn't get mashed in my pocket while climbing in the truck or hit the dashboard button somehow, but I am pretty much certain the tailgate was up when I left and I could swear that it happened while I was going down the road. This thread makes me wonder.
Mine started doing this yesterday.1490 miles. Won't open with fob, button on dash or button on tailgate, but will open itself when it wants. It's at dealer now, will keep you posted.
What was the outcome? I have a 2013 Ford Explorer, the tailgate opens throughout the day on it's own! Anyone else got this going on?
