Bump this a bit, Its not just ford that has this issue, dodge is going to release a recall for thier tailgates opening by them selves also. 1.1 million trucks This is from my RV club site.

"PLEASE NOTE THE EXCLUSIONS IN THE FINAL PARAGRAPH.
If you're driving a 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 or 3500 pickup truck, make sure any precious cargo is carefully secured in the bed. That's because Ram is recalling 1.1 million of those trucks over concerns the tailgate could unexpectedly open.
The problem is due to the power-locking functionality of the tailgate on certain Ram trucks. A small piece inside the latch mechanism can break, allowing a component to move too far and pull on the unlocking arms, thus unlatching the tailgate. The recall involves modifying the latch to limit how far the actuator components can move. Ram plans to notify customers and dealers about the recall on Sept. 14. Until then, the automaker advises customers to tie-down or otherwise secure any cargo.

The recall doesn't affect every single 2015-2017 Ram truck. It's only applicable to models with power-locking, rather than manual, tailgates. And it also excludes trucks with an eight-foot bed. Still, 1.1 million is far from an insignificant number of vehicles."

x2 same issue. My bed cover would hold it up until I drove and then it would open. I disabled the keyfob tailgate release via forscan and no more issues. Wish I had the dash button on my 16.

Mine did this the other day. Happened right when I release the brake it dropped.

This could be an easy fix - require two depressions to open the taligate - like the remote start.

They need to get off their butts at Ford and do something before someone gets hurt.....

My key fob requires 2 presses to drop the tailgate. It's printed right on the fob button.

I've tried dropping the tailgate using the button in the cab and there are some situations where it simply will NOT drop the tailgate. I didn't play with it much but it seems to only drop when the transmission is in Park.

Geez - I'm dumb - mine works that way also. Makes sense - maybe I'll just disconnect the switch in the cab which is what others have done.

Pretty sure this is how mine dropped.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that. I posted what I did thinking that maybe there are different fobs for the variable trim levels.

I could see a fob getting pressed twice while in your pocket, especially if you have other stuff in your pocket. I keep mine in my pocket and if it's been inadvertently opened by being in my pocket it's only happened once.

The button in my cab doesn't seem to be sensitive. Now that I've said that I'm sure it will start dropping open at each bump in the road.

No biggie I was just kidding - I should have caught that the X2 on the fob.... the fob from my ram use to go off all the time in my pocket - the crazy alarm would go off.

This should have been a recall and not just a TSB. I destroyed the compartment door on my 5th wheel this weekend. I know the tailgate was closed, as the last thing I do when packing up is place the container for sewer line in compartment and this cannot be done with tailgate down. Tailgate opened on it's own one other time, on my bumper pull trailer, last Spring and broke my jack casing. In both cases, I had just released the parking brake. I usually place my foot on pedal so it doesn't slap out. So, not caused by vibrations actuating the tailgate release budtton in my case.

Day 2 of having my truck I was backing out of the garage and it just dropped for no reason. Hasn't happened again. I also haven't noticed any correlation with release of the parking brake, but I'm going to start paying closer attention, especially as I start to tow. I use the park brake all the time when hooking up.

Having just come from a '16 Ram 3500, this is very different from the issue on the SD. When it says power-locking, it's talking about the locking mechanism when you lock/unlock the doors on the truck. Opening the tailgate is 100% manual on those trucks, and there has been no automated/powered tailgate release on any Ram ever until the 2019 1500s, which the HD trucks will get likely in 2020. On the Ram the issue is all mechanical, while the problem on the SD is electrical.

HRTKD,
Hit the "door unlock" switch and the tailgate switch becomes operational. I didn't know what was wrong with mine as well but it is a safety feature so (if the system is operating properly) the tailgate won't open driving down the road. So backing up to the trailer, I hit the door unlock and then the tailgate open and all works as designed.

As I recall, the driver's door was open. But I probably didn't unlock all the doors. I was standing on the running board at the time so I know the door was open and the transmission was (hopefully) in Park.

We should all probably file

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

This will most likely lead to a fix and a recall.....

We checked our 2019 F350 Lariat Ultimate and the tailgate will not come open unless it is park, during normal operation. However all bets are off if water gets into the connections at the spare tire. Need to get some dielectric grease. Any ideas where and how much?
