So you bought a new to you diesel truck...

Congrats on getting a diesel beast! I was quite giddy getting mine.
With about 200 HP and tons of torque, these trucks can haul a lot more than you think for a million miles if taken care of.
I wont get into horse power upgrades, drive line or brakes in this but this is for you, New To You Owners.

Over the past year I have learned a ton about this wonderful machine and time to share a bit of what I have learned.

These diesel engines can be intimidating at first but here is my hit list of stuff you should do once you buy it and a lot of it don't cost that much either.

Does the oil cap upside down on filler hole fly off with engine at idle or 2k RPM?
If yes then get a compression test done STAT as there should not be enough blowby to pop the cap off. Vibrate off is ok.

replace orange turbo inlet boot, Known to crack and dusts the turbo and then low compression

STD trans check shifter boot on top of trans for a split, PULL OFF the one inside the cab to look at it

Change fuel filter and look at the old one, if its black that means you have shot injector orings or algea in the tank

Change engine oil now and every 5k miles max
Change your trany, diffs, xfer case fluids
Change coolant and filter (if equiped) with proper SCA additive level

Make sure fuel pressure is at 40 PSI min in 3rd at WOT
Weak fuel pump pressure can cause low power and high EGTs since boost is reduced from lack of fuel, should never be less than 40 PSI WOT in third gear. A liquid filled gauge and a length of grease gun hose with a few fittings can allow the gauge to be read out side of the hood.
Get this FPR spring instead of doing the BB mod as the spring can bend Ford Powerstroke Fuel Pressure Regulator Spring 7.3 FPR F250 F350 95, 96 Diesel

fix all intake/exhaust leaks and get an EGT Gauge if towing that should cost you under 200 and make sure EGTs stay below 1250

leaf blower on exhaust and spray foamy liquid soap on every flange/ connector

on turbo intake make a adapter from a 3 in Fernco coupling (measure before buying in case different) and a 3 in PVC cap with short piece of pipe in it, drill 1/4 NPT fitting for air chuck, place other Fernco end on turbo and pressurize to 20 psi with a regulator then look for leaks at all connections and intake runners

Check turbo inlet boot for any splits or cracks that could dust turbo
6637 mod or S&B AIS intake filter is recommended

3" down pipe should be added as the factory squished pipe restricts flow
6.0 trans cooler or anything is better than the stock one

get a spare cam sensor Motorcraft Cam Position Sensor CPS 94-03 and a 10 mm wrench to keep in glove box

Clean your IPR and get new orings. or get the orings just in case.

does the ICP connecter have oil on it? that can make its readings be off and disconnecting it and taking it for a drive will show a CEL but if it runs better removed, then it needs replacing.

test your GP relay and ohm out each of the glow plugs with UVCH removed and see if 1 ohm each

Look for broken UVCH (Under Valve Cover Harness) connectors and for a burnt pin on outerside of connector. This can make it run rough. upgrade to 2000 SD ones that have bigger pins or get the doorman one in this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-0-50-mod.html

Fix those fuel bowl leaks with a rebuild kit, get new diesel rated fuel lines from riffraff and make sure you clean the FPR screen in there too.

Clean your battery, starter and ground connections

Engine will not start flow chart, print it and keep in glove box!

hard starting in cold and GP works fine? Maybe your armature clearance is to tight
Follow this if switching to synthetic 5-40 dont help

Shim kit on ebay but it can make your cores worthless for a rebuild if used
94-03 7.3 POWERSTROKE injector tune up shim KIT w/ special Tools to install

buy a scanner to monitor your engine on andriod
Amazon Amazon

Use the communication in the profile
SAE J1850-PWM
make sure you add in Ford PIDs
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ch.CarGaugePro
people like it cause it will pull codes, buzz test and CCT
Warning, Some OLD PCM's have to be flashed before you can pull codes

Find out your IPR% duty at idle, when its too high over 14% it means your injector orings are worn or a leak. HPOP usually don't go bad but more testing might be needed to prove it. Don't just toss parts at it either, some have spent 1000s and only needed a 100 dollar part to fix it.

Nice. Check the notes about the ICP. auto correct got you and changed it to IPC. Just don't want any confusion for the new folks. Nice job
