why the icp sensor size differences?

hello everybody, the other day driving through town i heard a noise difference in my injectors that sounded high pressure oil related, almost like a flutter and lately ive noticed the idle up and down just a little bit, probaby only enough for me who drives it every day to notice. so i got my scanner out and have been watching and documenting icp and ipr data the past week and after a day or so i checked my ipr tin nut and the icp sensor. the nut was tight but the icp sensor had oil in it. so today i pulled it the truck inside and pulled the icp sensor, grabbed my tools and went outside to my wrecked 2002 f350 cuz i changed that out with a new one from riffraff years ago, and its totally a different size and all. here in new york near canada its 20 degrees out so i was disgruntled i didnt have the proper tools the first time out. my question is, why the difference in icp sensor sizes? i checked my brothers 2001 f350 and his was the same as my 2001 f 350, it has the wrench fitting built underneath the sensor housing whereas the new one i pulled from my 02, the sensor housing is also the fitting you use to loosen and tighten it. i checked riffraff to make sure it was not a 99-01 and 02-03 sensor difference and they are sold 99 to 03 all the same. So the new sensor is the same for all of them. the data differences between my old sensor and the new one is my ipr voltage sits between .087 and .092 and pressures sit between 510 and 580 where as the original sensor going bad with the oil in it voltage sat between .082 and .087 and pressures sat between 460 and 510 which is what was causing the idle fluctuations im sure.

If you are talking about the nut toward the base of the sensor, then I assume it was a change to make the removal and installition of the ICP much easier. I just swapped out my OEM ICP on Friday for an updated version from RiffRaff. I had to remove the air box lid, intake tube to the turbo, loosen the CAC drivers side tube at the spider and intercooler just so I could get a wrench in there to remove the original. The updated version, I put a 1/2" deep well socket over it and turned the ratchet a few times.

Not sure if that is the only reason, but I was very thankful for the change.

That's it... the new one is easier to remove/install, where the old one needed a claw foot.

dothedew192 - You're off with your IPR. IPR needs to be read in percent mode, so your .082 is actually 8.2%.

Sitting in the driveway at idle may or may not reveal a bad ICP sensor - I've had loose injectors make the IPR/ICP out of balance at idle, and I know worn injector O-rings can do the same. The readings you had before and after could easily be explained away with simple oil temperature. The real difference will be seen/heard on the road with full engine temp.

thanks for the replys guys, i figured they changed it due to the difficulty to remove it. i was just wondering and found it out. it almost looks like the 6.0s icp sensor. i was reading the data on my cheap launch scanner which reads the data wierd but it was reading the ipr % as well and it was rock steady at 10.6 at idle till i hit the throttle. the .082 was voltage i believe as it would rise when i'd hit the throttle. i should of just been reading them on my snap on scanner but i dont like bringing that with me from work. road testing it seems a hundred percent better. from the idle being steady all the way to wide open throttle feeling stronger. though it could just be in my head but i know for a fact it was going bad as oil had been seeping through for a month or two now and i just kept cleaning it out cleaning the harness out and calling it good. and i just replaced my injector o rings probably five thousand miles ago. sitting here thinking i should probably retorque those hold down bolts. my second time having to do them as the o rings i originally replaced the stock ones with began failing 20,000 miles after having changed them.
