Sunpro Super Tach 2

Just installed a Sunpro Super Tach 2 in my 72 XLT. With the ignition switch on and motor not running it reads 1000 rpm. Crank it up it reads 1500 rpm at idle which I know is incorrect. The switch is on 8 cylinder. Green wire on negative side of coil. Black ground. Red to switched 12v. Any suggetstions? Bad tach?

Sounds like a bad tach, or the needle needs adjusting. Doubt you can adjust the needle, so I would take it back and get a new one.

Try resetting the switch to see if it "wakes up" to show the correct rpms.

It has been a long time, but if I recall there are 3 wires. Would you share with us which by color is connected to where.

I don't want to discount the other guys replys but sometimes we can get the wiring wrong. Let's make sure on that 1st.

Tried resetting the switch. Didn't work. Red to switched 12v power. Black to ground. Green to neg side of coil. White to instrument lights. Tried it on my Jeep. Didn't work on it either. Both have stock ignition. So I'm definately thinking the tach is no good.
