Tach problems... imagine that

So i finished hooking up my autometer tach on my 91 f150 302... and to the best of my knowledge it's hooked up properly but there is a slight problem. I am getting off the wall tach readings. I bought this aftermarket tach because i believed the cluster tach to be messed up (reading 3500 rpm at start up and 3000 when the engine is off). Now when i started her up my "new" tach is reading 2400 rpm. I can tell just by the sound that its definetly not at 2400... is there something else that could be causing the false reading? and before anyone says anything i do have the tach set for the v8 setting.. only thing that i could come up with would be a possible faulty reading from the ignition coil? any help you guys could give me would be great... thanks

most aftermarket tachs have a switch to select the number of cylinders. Did you set that properly?

Lol, well according to his first post, he does have it set to 8.

You ran a nice new wire to the tach test on the coil, right? Nothing recycled or kinked?
