tach bouncing around..

tach bouncing around..
i recently baught my truck and it already had a little tach mounted on the steering column.. at times the needle would jump whenever i stepped on it.. so the other day i decided i take a look at the wires.. well ground was good.. but the tach wire had about 2 or 3 connections.. butt connectiosn with shrink tubing.. then there was also a weird link of some work.. open.. when it hit a ground the tach would die down to 0 rpm.. so i figured i clean this up.. so i cut out all the 3 connections and put one butt connector on.. even worse!! now the tach jumps around all the time.. except at idle.. wut did i do wrong?? then today i rewired the tach to the coil wire.. and re grounded it.. ?? still same problem?? is the actual tach maybe worn out?? or could it be the power wire groundind somewhere?? funy cuz the back ground light doesnt flicker or go off at all.... not sure wut to do now?? any ideas?
