I've got a 1500 mile trip planned later this year that has a stretch of nearly 400 miles on dirt without a fuel stop. Should be interesting. The intent all along was to build a reliable, simple expedition capable rig for week long adventures. So far, so good.
Power is stock for now. The old 351M runs well and seeps oil out the rear main, mostly because the truck sat for long periods of time before I owned it. One of these days I'll pull the motor and reseal it, and maybe try to build in a little more power, but it's not urgent.
Truck is currently in the shop getting a Dakota dash and......a new motor. Compression was way down on 2 cylinders; plenty of metal shavings in the pan, and the timing chain was so loose I'm surprised it didn't jump a tooth. That wasn't really planned, but I did ask for compression testing and one thing led to another.....The engine it had was a rebuilt one that went in the truck back in 1986. I even have the receipts for that....lol
It's getting another 351, but with more cam, and 9:1 compression, and a few other upgrades but we're keeping it largely stock for reliability. For now I'm keeping the 2bbl. Maybe I'll upgrade that later, but she still has to pass smog here.
Also going in is a new Champion 3 row radiator and all new door weather seals so the AC has a chance of keeping up.
More to come!
Hoping to have the truck back soon.
Dakota Dash - check. Nice having gauges that work and it almost looks OEM.
All new door window seals - check. Also nice having windows that don't rattle anymore
New 3 row Champion Radiator - check. I added a 7 blade flex fan as well to keep it cool with the AC on.
9000lb winch - check. Why not? LOL
One of these days I'll update the full list of stuff done to this truck. I'm getting closer and closer to new truck money into this thing and it still has old oxidized paint (and it'll probably stay that way), but having all new mechanicals is nice.
I would honestly look to an electric fan conversion to pickup some HP and additional fan cooling....flex fans are the worst.
At minimum a factory clutched blade if wanting to stay mechanical.
Love the truck!!

Truck never had a fan clutch, and the stock 5 blade wasn't pulling enough air. The flex fan pulls a lot more air. Aside from having sharp edges, what's the issue with a flex fan?
As for an electric, part of the front is already covered by the small electric fan on the AC condenser. I don't think I have the real estate up front for an effective dual electric fan setup, nor do I really want the electrical draw they will take.
