Hello all,
I have a quick question for you.
Before i get fried for not doing my readings...I have done some research in different starter motor topics on this forum; rat trap/clapper, external solenoid, auto and manual starters and flywheel/flex plate configurations..
Basically my scenario is this.
My 85 302 manual f100 has been a pain the bum to start.. slow cranking, seems like the battery is dying, hot wires from relay, puffs of smoke etc..
I started with reading through these forums and tried recommended fault finding...
I replaced the battery, replaced the starter relay, checked terminals and leads for corrosion/breaks.. replaced all cables from battery-starter relay-starter motor-ground cables... to find that none has resolved the issue..
Finally i took out the started motor yesterday to find that the housing where the starter gear sits has snapped in half..
Before i go any buy a new clapper, I have a second hand working XF falcon 250 starter that came out of an auto configuration given to me last night.
I haven't done any measurements to the starter motor yet... I will tonight once I knock off work..
Does anyone know off the top off their head if the starter motor will fit (obviously I will need to do some minor wiring changes for the solenoid), but will i need to space the motor out a few mm... or will it not work at all do to "potential" flywheel/flex plate teeth mix match.
Hopefully you can understand my jargon.
thanks in advance.

I looked, he is from Australia. I am not sure we are going to be able to help very much, Ford used different engines and configured their vehicles differently over there. I am not even sure what Falcon looks like and what engines it had.
haha.. no worries..
Thanks anyway.. I'll put on my experimental hat when I get home and let you know the outcome..
If it doesn't help you yanks, it may help someone else.
Cheers
This page on my web site shows the starters used in the US for these trucks: Starters - ???Gary's Garagemahal. Note that the 300 six and the Windsor 8's use a different starter for a manual transmission than an automatic. I don't have any way of knowing for an Aussie 250, but it doesn't look good.
Gary, I have your website bookmarked already Has helped me out heaps.
Looks as though the 250 flex plate is 160T and the 302W flywheel is 164T..
So that may cause some binding I'd imagine. Close however

"Down Under" trucks could have the 351C (Cleveland) that was only installed in US/Canada 1970/74 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars & Ford Rancheros.
351C A/T starter is different than M/T starter. Flywheel ring gear has 164 teeth.
hey guys...
as expected.. no luck with the 250 x flow starter.
I ended up ordering a new one off ebay.
From my understandings.. 289,302w, 302c, 351w and 351c manuals all take the same starter.. autos are slightly different as mentioned above.. 164T for a manual and 157T for autos with different protrude lengths of nose and gear
