I have an 82 F100 reg cab ive been considering putting tilt steering column
in I have looked at it for a while now wondering if its a good idea and how hard it will be
It isn't that bad. I've swapped columns a couple of times, and it probably took a day both times - and I'm slow. Here's a link to illustrations of the columns: Steering Columns - ???Gary's Garagemahal.
But, is it a good deal? Hard to say. The tilt mechanism isn't as robust as the non-tilt, so you shouldn't pull yourself into the cab using the steering wheel with a tilt column. (Hmmm. I just acquired an F250HD, which sits tall. And, it has a tilt column. )
The replacement part is available at the part stores, so it isn't the end of the world. But until you fix it you will have to carry a pair of pliers to pull the rod up that goes to the ignition switch or the truck won't start.
I've done non cruise to cruise-equipped column swaps in less that 1/2 hour, Basically 3 bolts on the column, and 6 or 8 on the cover plate to firewall. (after the plastic dash parts are removed)

The problem with a genuine Ford tilt column (only the wheel tilts), there are no parts available from Ford, all are obsolete.
Here's a pic of the A/T tilt column. Notice 3B661 .. This is E2TZ-3B661-A (replaced D0AZ-3B661-A) .. Tilt Wheel Locking Lever. Its serrations wear down, the wheel flops around.
It's been obsolete for several years, no Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any. The only good news are its applications:
1970/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars; 1978/91 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline; 1980 Granada/Monarch/Versailles, so you might find a user in a junkyard.
