Yesterday when I turned the key, it sounded like the solenoid for the starter is on it's way out. A very loud and rapid rat-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta. Turn off the key, try again and it starts. Same again today. Couldn't be a relay- right? Any answer to this and what does it take to replace the starter? 1. Pull engine...just kidding I hope!
thanks

No, that wouldn't be a relay, it sounds like the starter motor is bad.
The good news is that it's easy to fix! The starter is mounted near the oil pan, the long cylindrical thingy that is sticking out of the tranny bellhousing. Undo the electrical connections and the mounting bolts, and it will come right off.
The truck is in it's forth year and has about 55k miles on it and it is the orginal battery. Good question, thanks. And I expect to replace the starter motor.
Guess I'll head to Napa this morning.
