302 starter help..

ok so i have a 91 mustang motor, with a brand new stock replacement flywheel, luk clutch and pressureplate. the engine is mated to a t10 topload 4 speed from a 67 fairlane. i ordered a starter for the fairlane, and it worked a couple times and now when i start it the starter is staying engaged sometimes. do i have the wrong starter for this application or is something else off. i also DO have the aluminum spacer plate between motor and trans because i know that makes a difference. any and all input is greatly appreciated

It sounds like you do have the wrong starter motor. Did you tell the parts man that it was for a 1967 Fairlane with a manual transmission?

The automatic starters have a different snout which will cause the drive to project too far, resulting in the chronic engagement.

yeah i ordered it myself on rockauto. i got froggy last night and tried a fox mustang starter and it works fine. im not sure what bellhousing i have, it does not appear to be a fairlane one. and i cant see any numbers except where "ford" is cast into it. its aluminum though. i dont know i just hope this starter will last. only time will tell. thanks for the input as well.
