Floor shifter conversion issues- Rat trans
I have been having trouble with my linkages getting stuck somehow. I finally lost 1st gear. Now I took the trans out and found that I was able to shift into 1st fine with the trans on the floor. I also see no major wear on the gears. I pulled the tail housing off and noticed the bearing having seperated. I assume that somehow the extra movement in the shaft due to the collapsed bearing caused the the gear to not be able to engage fully. I am not sure why I was able to do it with the trans out.
BUT besides that. The shifter linkage was popping out when attempting to shift from 'high side' on the right to 'low side' on the left of the shift pattern and getting stuck. I would then have to go back into 2nd gear to pop it back in, then over to the left and down to 1st. When trying to shift without a deliberate down, over, down movement it would pop out. Same for 1-2 shifts. Looking at the inside of the trans I can see how the 2-3 synchro has to slide to neutral before the 1-2 synchro can move from neutral. I think this is the cause for my issue, BUT I must assume I have some sort of a shifter linkage issue.
I think this popping out and me manhandling the shifter to try and pop things back in caused the rear bearing to fail.
Also- when removing the trans I just unbolted it from the bell housing and puller it out. Any advice on lining the clutch back up or do I have to take the bell housing off?
