tranny problems. please help

Hi everybody Im new here I just finished puttinga new clutch in my 1990 F150 4x4. I didnt know how to just remove the stick so i took the whole shifter out trans was in neutral when i took the shifter out but when i had the trans on the bench i took the top off to nose around and check stuff out and i guess i wasnt paying attention and when i when i put the top back on cause the trans is in gear now im not sure witch gear. Well the truck is back together last thing to do was put shifter back in. It dropped in no problem but wont shift into any gear it basically wont move at all but its not tight like i jammed it in or anything. so i know i have to take the carpet back and pull the floor pan to take the top off the trans, will putting trans back in neutral fix my problem i just want some advice before tear back into it this is the first ford i have owned that wasnt made in the 70s all my other trucks had the np435 trans im pretty familiar with them this truck has the m5od trans kinda new territory for me any advice would be greatly appriceated thanks.

You probably are in one gear and the stick is in the wrong fork. When you get the top off get all three shift rails in the center position. Then drop the stick in and make sure you can shift through all the gears.

BTW, the shifter comes off pretty easy. Under the boot there's a stud with 17mm nut on the passenger side. Take it off and put it on the other side of that stud and tighten it until it releases the shifter.

Thanks brown, I did get it figured out trucks back on the road. I thought that stud and nut would take the shifter off but never thought about putting it on the other side thanks again.
