Convert to post style starter soleniod

94 F150 5.0L
I've gotten fed up with the spade terminal on my starter corroding over and over. The truck sits outside so moisture always seems to condense around the engine. For the time being I soldered it on but I'd like to change the solenoid to one with a post and nut. Do the later type solenoids fit on these starters or even better could I just tap in a stud in the place with the spade is on the solenoid?

from this to this

Yes, a lot of replacement starters come with the stud instead of the spade terminal

That's a dumb idea. Do it and tell us how it works out.

I'm not interested in buying a new starter. I just might go ahead and tap in a stud then. It's not any more dumb than some of the crap that's designed into this truck.

Don't tap it too deep.

I don't believe there is enough metal material there to tap for a stud. There is just a magnet wire and a blob of solder.
Soldering a copper stud on may be an option, or Napa may have a proper solenoid for it.

I'm for the most part done with this truck and only want to get it repaired to the point of it being usable for the next owner. I was wanting to see if there is a solenoid that would work on this.
I think that there might be enough metal to tap a small copper or brass stud in the place where the spade is soldered on. I really feel there is nothing to lose in trying as I can always get another solenoid and solder the wire on to the spade if there isn't one with a stud that would work.
I'm sorry to disappoint all you die hard Ford owners here but I have had nothing but disappointments with this truck. Maybe you guys have more patience than I do. The 85 I bought new in the past wasn't all that great either but it didn't have many options to start with to go bad.
I'm also dealing with some mystery issues on my Crown Victoria too. Just too much to deal with all at one time.

Dealing with Troublesome Users
Can I block posts, emails and messages from specific users?

If there are particular members that bother you and you do not want to see their posts or receive Private Messages and Emails from them, then you can add these members to your 'Ignore List'. There are several ways to do this:

Through your User Control Panel: User CP, Settings & Options, Edit Ignore List. Then, type their name into the empty text box and click 'Okay'.

What if I see something offensive?

You will find 'Report' links in many places throughout the board. These links allow you to alert the board staff to anything which you find to be offensive, objectionable or illegal.

Nice diagram, thanks for taking the time to post it.
If I was going to keep the truck, I would convert it to the old style of starters Ford used to use that had only a solenoid on the fender.

I don't see the reason to have the fender mounted solenoid and one on the starter. There's just more stuff to go wrong. A spade terminal on the solenoid? What genius came up with that? I'm glad my Crown Vic has a post on the solenoid for that.

I missed the link earlier. That's perfect. For that price it's not even worth messing with trying to retrofit a post.
Thanks.
