I have been having trouble locating the correct starter for my 95 f-150. The one the AutoZone keeps saying I need is not correct. The starter gears resting position is protruding about 1/2 in. further from the housing than it should be. I have a picture of the starter I pulled off the truck ,sitting next to the remanufactured be unit. Anybody else have this same issue? My truck has the 4.9l and a manual transmission btw.

Sounds like what you're running into is their database is using the "Mustang-factor" because somehow for the Mustangs (and maybe other vehicles as well) for the '79 and later model years they somehow managed to use just one part number for all transmission types. In the case of the later PMGR starter style like you have on your truck, that would have equated to a #3205 (semi-standard industry number) for automatic transmissions.
Whereas our trucks continued to use two different starters based on the transmission type. As said then, for trucks the #3205 is for Auto Transmissions only.
So when you take it back ask them to pull up a #3223 to look at as well so you can compare the two, to what you pulled from yours.
The #3223 is officially for the manual transmission trucks.
