I am going through this right now. Last weekend I tried the foil repair but after breaking a plastic component on the actuator, trying to gorilla glue it back on as it is a stationary piece, and then getting to the thermal resistor finally after all this frustration, it did not work when re-installed. I bought a $10 one on ebay that should be here tomorrow. I figured it was worth the try for a free fix and worse case scenario I would - and did- buy a cheap one.

did this on old green 10+ years ago. paid $20 for the set of 4.

they are still going strong, but if one ever fails, it will be quick and easy to replace. not to mention, CHEAP.
I'm digging this route, but the mounting in an easy location, would this be second nature once I'm in there? Thinking of ordering 2 for the shelf.

Yep.

You might have to drill a hole, but we were able to get by with some self-tapping screws. Then you just bend the rod to where it is needed and attach it to the factory one with the included hardware.

People have asked this before, but didn't have a pic of the original install. After all these years, one started acting up. Ordered a replacement (less than a $1), and opened the door up with the intention of replacing the actuator.

Turned out, it had shifted a little and just needed an adjustment. Works perfect again. It has only been there for ~12 years.

Snapped a photo so you all can see where they are mounted:
