door mechanism change

The teeth on my door mechanism (the part where the handle mounts on the inside of the door) is pretty chewed up. I know they sell just the teeth portion to replace on the mechanism itself. I was wondering if anyone has removed theirs and replaced it with new ones. I can't see how the old ones come out. Or does the whole mechanism, arms, etc have to removed? I have another set which look pretty good. Looks like a big job. Plus I have power windows. Any easy ways of changing these?

I replaced mine and it wasn't too difficult. I did it mainly because I wanted the longer shafts for my thicker door panels. The shafts were 20.00 each and a new mechanism would run about 40.00. I'd say for the trouble, if you don't need the longer shafts, just buy a new mechanism. It's called a 'remote door latch regulator'.

If you do want to do it yourself you have to grind off the little tabs where it was pressed in at the factory. Pop it apart, remember how it all goes, clean & grease it up on assembly, then put it back together with the new shaft. Hold it place with a clamp and/or vise grip then spot weld where the tabs were. Mine work great.

Forgot to mention that you DO have to take the whole mechanism out of the door to do it.

I figured they would have to come out. I was fooling with it and couldn't get it out. It looked like the whole window had to come out with it. If I'm going to have to pull the whole thing out. I'm just replacing the whole thing. 56 Effie, was it difficult to get the whole mechanism out? Do you have to take the window and everything out with it? I gotta get this fixed because now I have to reach outside and open the door. I don't have the window cranks anymore because they are power. May be easier going to power door locks?

When I did this I had the whole window and cranking mechanisms out because I was putting in a larger ventless window. I just checked the shop manual and it says to lower the glass and disconnect the window regulator arm from the roller in the glass channel, then raise the glass and hold it up with some tape. Next, turn the regulator halfway between top and bottom. You should be able to do this even with your power ones I would think. Then remove the 3 screws and swing the assembly downward to disconnect it from the door lock link...then slide it out thru the access hole.

Hopes this helps you out.

I replaced one so far. First i bought just the shaft, ground down the tabs and disassembled it all. the i returned the shaft and bought the whole assembly. Once i ground down the tabs i saw the housing was cracked and the shaft wasn't a perfect fit.
