I just bought a 66 f 100...it currently has 235 75 R15 tires on it now.
Is that a good tire to size to run? I want to use my rims of an old mustang ...american racing torque thrust rims? Will these rims fit on the truck?
Just need some guidance on what tire and rim to use. Thanks Scott
I'm running the same wheel and tire size on my '64 f100. I like the size but the front left wheel rubs a little bit if I turn to sharp. As for the mustang wheels, I once tried putting some cragers that came off a '65 mustang on my truck just to make it mobile and the bolt pattern wouldn't line up.
I believe 225s are the modern size closest to original the old stock size bias-ply tires were skinny as hell, they almost look comical today. But lots of trucks didn't have power steering then. Fat tires are harder to turn with manual steering. Technically speaking radials should only be installed on wheels designed for them. Have never had a problem with the original wheels and radials, but.
Here's a picture of my truck with 235/75x15s on 15 x 7 inch Torque Thrusts. No rubbing issues. As blakdymond points out, the F100 and Mustang bolt patterns are different. Good luck!
The 235 is a good fit for the truck, may be some newer variations but that size is decent. Don't think your Mustang has the same bolt pattern, but if you already own them, jack up a corner, pull the wheel and give it a trial fit. Then you will know for sure.
In regards to your rubbing issue you may have to look at the "lock to lock" travel of your steering wheel. This refers to the number of turns of your steering wheel from all the way left to all the way to the right. Ideally you want to start at the center and have an equal number of turns in each direction. Now for the harder part. On your I beams there is a bolt on each side that stops the turning travel of the wheel. I do not know what any factory setting is but if you adjust it for maximum steering wheel turn to just before any rubbing happens you should be ok. PLEASE keep in mind also that if the wheels are allowed to turn too far in either direction you may end up with a condition that results in you front wheels being too close to perpendicular to the truck and then your rear wheels will be pushing them sideways against the rolling direction. These I beam bolts are meant to limit the travel to prevent excess turning and are located close to the king pin area.
Since I am a computer moron and can't figure out how to answer your question where you posted it, I'll answer it here: I bought my Torque Thrusts from Summitt Racing.
