Instrument Cluster with Tachometer?

Hey all, just a quick question. I have restored my 87 F-150 Custom... to the point it is almost a "Brand New" old truck.... That said I have kept it mostly original, it has a C-6 tranny that was just rebuilt and runs Great!, (The original Tranny was an AOD according to the VIN) but I think I'll leave it in there since it is in such good shape and it is a strong tranny. My question is about adding a Tachometer? My dash (at least the one in the truck when I got it) does not have a Tachometer. The salvage yard where I go "shopping" has numerous Dashes with Tachometers. Could I just get one of those and put it in and have it function, or is there other wiring required? I remember reading somewhere about a wire coming off the distributor for a Tachometer.

I did this on my '91 and it was plug-and-play.

Be careful which year cluster you are getting.
You may find that your truck isn't charging after a cluster swap.
***I think 1991 was the change*** but don't quote me on that.
Do a little research, but be aware of the possibility.
I swapped an '88 cluster into my '87 without issues.

1987/88 F150/350 & Bronco: It's not "plug and play" because the printed circuit board with tachometer is different.

E8TZ-10K843-B (replaced E7TZ-10K843-B) .. Printed Circuit Board-Use with Tachometer / Marked: E7TF-10C956-BA or E8TF-10C956-BA / Obsolete

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

The tach cluster will plug and play from 87 to 91 years.

About 5 months ago I found a nice clean 91 F350 diesel tach cluster. I installed in into my 89 F250 with the 300 I6 engine.

The ONLY THING I had to do was change out the diesel tach PCB with my gas tach PCB and changed a resistor on the gas tach pcb(to recal needle sweep). After recal of the tach, I now have red line at 4K, perfect for the pseudo diesel I6 gas engine!

OK, Thanks guys I did buy a cluster but when I plugged it in and started the truck nothing worked. I just found a Cluster website and I am going to positively ID whuch cluster I bought. If it won't work, I will sell it and look for the right one.

OK, I just checked the Circuit Board on the new Cluster I bought and it is,
E9TF-10C956-B, that being said I think it is a newer cluster and therefore won't work, Is that correct?

Interesting this thread pops up today of all days.

Just installed a '91 cluster w/tach in my '88 - plug and play. The only thing I did was set the mileage, unplug the "engine" light bulb - when the truck was on, that light wouldnt turn off, and I was done.

OK, I have fixed the NO-Charge Situation and it is working fine. Now for the Guages. My tach Jumps when I start the truck and once in awhile when I am driving, and my Oil Pressure Guage isn't working. Fuel and coolant temp appear to be working, and my volt metis in the center, it doesn't appear to be moving but with the charging issue fixed I suppose it should stay right there. I have read that the Oil Pressure guage from an 87 needs to be modified to work with a Tach cluster.. Mine is definatley an 87-91 cluster, but I don't know exactly which year. (Is there a way to tell?) Before I put it in I looked at the connectore from the tacj cluster (the one I bought had the Connectors still attached to the back.) I moved my wires from my wire harness to match the ones that were in the tack cluster. There were only two three differences. The brown (left) connector has a wh/r wire that goes in in two locations and there s a wire (same wh/r) that goes from one location to the other. (like a jumper).. and then the wh/r goes out. My orifinal cluster only has a wh/r going into the brown cluster in one location. In several of the wiring diagrams I have seen the wh/red is the Engine warning light/Oil Pressure guage... anyone have an idea what is going on with the Tach, or how to correct the Oil Pressure guage...

I have the 1987 EVTM and see the white/red jumper to the engine warning module.
Does your truck have electric or a mechanical fuel pump?

My truck came with a tachometer but I don't see any difference in the oil pressure sender wiring between tach and non-tach.
Dk Grn/Yellow comes from the s340 splice through C340, C100 and C208A (pin 6) at the back of the cluster.
The R/Y wire is hot in run for the other side of the tach.(pin 13)
Bk/Y from distributor splice 341 goes through the above connectors to (pin 7) of the cluster plug.
This is ground. (Maybe that's your problem?)

Tell me what you've got and I'll post the pics.

Tach issue

I have an eltronic pump. I am posting the photos of the Connections from the original wire harness first, and the connections on the new cluster I put in. I took it for a short drive and the Speedo is working and the temp guage works. The voltage seems to work as well...
