Instrument Cluster

I have an 88 F-150. Mine does not have the instrument cluster the includes the tachometer. Ive located one in a salvage yard that looks good. Was woundering if any body knows weather this is a direct plug in item where the tach. and all will work or weather i will need to do some rewireing? Thanks for any help.

As long as you stay with the same year, it is just plug and go. Ford changed internal wiring for the cluster several times. Going to another year can mean everything works except the alternator never charges the battery. There are ways around the problem, but staying with the same year is the easy way.
You might want to change all the light bulbs in the cluster while you have it out. There is a bunch of them.
Good luck Frank

I know of the problem Frank talks about in the 92-96 clusters but I have heard that the 87-91 will work OK for you.

If you do change it an have camera I would love some close up photos of the back of each cluster and what color wire and its stripe goes to each pin number of the two plugs.

I need this information to help other members with their cluster problems in the 87-91 year range.

I would appreciate it very much, I have the Ford shop manuals for 88 & 89 but not the EVTM or Diagrams for the truck. I do have everything for the vans but they have different clusters than the trucks.
