Question, could I take a instrument cluster that has the tach and replace the current one in my 89 f250. If so would I have to run new wiring or would it be a direct swap?
88 to 91 are direct swaps for tach clusters. 87 cluster will work but you will need to change the oil sending unit to a 87 for the oil gauge to work properly.
Not an expert on this one, but I know on my fox body cougar, you had to match engine cylinders or else you'd have to rewire for the tach.
That is, the 6 and 8 cylinder trucks may not have the same tach wiring.
Surely someone else will confirm or correct as needed.
Its plug and play for these years, the tach will be told what engine cylinders it has by the engine bay harness.
If by chance you do have to "reprogram" the tach, its a simple as removing or adding a ground from the tach gauge Labled as "6/8" other pins are power, ground and tach.
I did this swap in my '91 bronco going from the non-tach instrument cluster to one that has the tach. Took about 45 minutes, and everything worked!
I would recommend staying with the same year, if possible, i.e., 89 to 89 in your case.
We swapped '96 no tach to '96 w/tach on our bronco. Everything works except the fuel gage shows 3/4 full when the tank is full. The fuel gage was very accurate before the swap. Any ideas?
