I haven't cut a live Christmas tree since I was 13 or so, so I have no clue what the etiquette is regarding cutting your own.
Why is it not cool to top a tree? If one is too tall, and you only want the top 6 feet or so, why not? Does it kill the tree?

Well, first of all, there is no such thing as "too tall trees" in the forest. There are two ways to top a conifer, both being of lesser preference for me. One being to just cut the top off and leave the rest standing (obnoxious), the other is to fall the tree and cut the top off. Either way is obnoxious to me frankly, with either a maimed tree or a mess left laying on the ground equating to fuel loading and fire hazard. Personally, I feel that if someone is cutting the top from a tree, I'd rather they just fall the damned thing and haul the rest off to use for firewood and wreaths or something. When they're topped and left standing they look like crap, even after a new terminal bud has established, leaving a dog leg in the trunk. It would be preferable to see trees (in my little part of the world) to look more natural and straight, not having that telltale jacking where the top was cut off. If people could just walk a little further, they'd find a tree meeting their standard of perfection without having to maim an otherwise picturesque tree. IMO, maiming a tree to avoid walking a little further for something of the right size and shape is just plain lazy. If someone wants to find a tree the "easy way", they should just go to the local corner Christmas tree lot. Sorry if I sound like I'm a little whiny biach, but I live in a forested area and really get rather disturbed when folks come up here and maim the forest. I wish people would respect the land up here. I don't go down to the city and crap on their sidewalks. Mutual respect, please?

Not whiney at all. This is exactly why I asked, to learn the proper etiquette and respect.
Yea Tim some people don't respect the Forest , pizzez me off when I go up and see topped trees , Garbage , and Broken Glass , and to tell ya Those are the same people that Crap on those sidewalks .
Freeze spell 3rd night on it's way , got the Calves bedded down in the barn , my cows are happy Cows with a heat light , on a sad note just seen a Tallow truck fully loaded , some Rancher lost a semi trailer full.
Happy Two tacos for Tuesday Nor Cal. Hope everyone can stay warm. It is 32 degrees outside at 8am! I can only imagine how cold it got in the middle of the night.
I am almost done with my unpacking. Three bags, and four boxes left. Starting to feel like a home now. And, been here a whole week and not been bitten by any bed bugs! I am definitely a happy camper!!!
I totally agree Tim. I'm all for using our forests but there is a way to do it responsibly. But as you mentioned we have people so lazy that they can't even haul their own trash out. When we're hunting we usually end up with a full trash bag of trash...
We have pretty good cloud cover in Ashland today. Kept it a little warmer last night. Darn gutters clogged again. The lowest point of the gutters is also the farthest point from a down spout. I'm going to have to tear them off and reangle them after new years...
Yes indeed, do not want to move for a long time, and this place is on top of the roach problem. I was told they spray one building (there are 6 total) every three months for roaches. That explains why except for two tiny babies on the second day, I have not seen any. Also, it seems my bed bug problem is gone, as I have been here over a week, and not been bitten. I still have the encasement on the recliner, but plan on taking that off either in January, or February. Since they can go months without eating. If I wait until February, it will be four months without food for any that are still inside. I don't think there are any alive iinside though, as there are a couple of rips in the encasement and I have not seen any or been bitten.
Bit of a weird day today. Hard freeze warning for several days last week and then I come outside to 52*. It looked too good to be chained to the computer at work today, but need to get this project out. Yet Saturday is looking at a low of 28*
Jim, glad to hear that you are settled in and unpacked. Now if we all can stay healthy, life will be good.
