Safety Chain Hookup

I am new to Super Duty trucks. I am having a problem with the slots on my '17 SD for the safety chain hooks when towing. They are not tall enough for a beefy hook to rotate into and with the design too wide/deep for them to latch shut.

Neither my local ford dealer nor trailer dealers I have talked to know what the fix is. What are others doing about this?

I know, we were discussing this in another thread. It's ridiculous. Here's is what I had to do for now:

I was hoping for something a little more discreet than large shackles, tried quick links but they don't fit either.

Is this only on the 3" or does it happen on the 2.5" also

Yeah me too. I don't like them hanging there. I think changing out the hooks on my trailers may be in the cards. That doesn't solve the problem of when you use another trailer.....

All receivers have this style now.

Hard to tell from the picture but will the entire hook fit through there and you could hook it back to itself? This would also be dependent on if you have enough slack in your safety chains.

Are you going over the top and down or from underneath? The safest way is from underneath.

Come on Ford...this has been mentioned SEVERAL times on this site. Absolute terrible design especially when the 2011-2016 had NO issues accepting any hooks or chains. 80K and you can't hook your dang trailer chains to it without jury rigging it.

I have the same issue with my trailers, but have not had a chance to look for new hooks yet.

I dislike this design but it will work. You have to rotate the hooks quite a bit but the latch will close. There's also no good place to hook the breakaway to.

Just do what I have others do, Just hook it to the chains. lol I wonder how hard the plate would be to drill for an eye bolt for the break away hookup

it doesn't matter which way you go. It won't fit. I just went and bought the big shackles. It looks like crap but it'll have to do for now.

thats a good idea, I know I don't have enough slack though. That and I don't think that's legal. I'd have t check my DOT book to be sure.
