Question 1948 F1 Flathead Six 226 Oil Pump

If it's possible, how do you test an oil pump on the 48 F1 Flathead Six 226?

Thanks
Bartman

As a practical matter, the best approach if there is a perceived problem with the pump is to remove it and inspect the clearances per the workshop manual.

If you have verified low oil pressure (with a known good mechanical gauge), first thing I would check is the relief valve. They can get gummed up and stick open. They are relatively simple to remove with the engine in place. The springs also get weak. Specs for the spring are also in the manual.

Checking the inlet screen and pan for excess sludge is a good step also.

Thanks Ross. I haven't pulled the pump yet, but I will soon. As for the "known good mechanical gauge," I am going by the stock gauge. I also have a rod knock I have to take care of.

You might want to read "Brain75"s thread on his oil pressure problems, also his thread on putting a T5 on his 226:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-progress.html
(there is a table in that thread that's messed up, unfortunately)

Ross, I read the thread on the oil pressure issue, but he never says how it was resolved. I sent him a message, but his message box is full and he can receive any new ones.

I've looked for a shop manual, but I can't find one that includes the 48 226.

His crankshaft and rods were shot, the journals were oval. He'd plastigage'd the journals and happened to catch them at a tight spot, so he thought they were OK. When he yanked the engine and miked them, they had huge clearance in some spots. He ended up buying a good used engine.

The 49-51 Workshop Manual includes the 226; available electronically and hard copy on eBay. The Parts CD is also very useful, 1948-56 Ford Truck Master Parts Catalog CD - HiPo Parts Garage.
