Hey Gang, on my 90 F250 the oil pump seems to be iffy. When its cold it makes great pressure (in the "normal" range on the oil gauge) when it warms up it goes down near the Low side and the needle bounces until I push the throttle and it makes oil pressure again, I figure the gauge could be phony, but it will start to overheat if it idles without oil pressure. Could the filler neck be clogged or does the pump need replacing?
sounds like the same problem i have on my 5.0. I was told to check the oil return ports in the heads, they were clear so i think its the oil pump screen. The pumps hard to get at so i think i might try and soak it in solvent (in the oil pan) for a day or two to see if that clears it. if not i will have to remove pan and repace pump and tube

Reason: spelling
CC: What solvent are you going to try and soak it in? If you have any luck please let me know! Otherwise I'm in in the same boat with cracking the pan off and redoing pump/pickup
Sparky: how hard was it to replace that intermediate shaft? Is there any way of testing for a broken intermediate shaft?
They make a special engine flushing solvent...I forgot the name of it, but it is made for stuff like this. I'm going to put the solvent in this weekend, so I don't know how it will work.
I'm still working at the repairs on weekends (I'm a rookie). I didn't find the broken intermediate shaft til I pulled the oil pan off. In my opinion, if I ever have to take the oil pan off again, I'll just pull the engine (which I'm doing now)...
studlybilly, we put the solvent in over the weekend and tonight we drained it out and replaced the oil filter. Put some more oil in, fired it up, and it ran just fine. Either the solvent worked, the oil filter had something wrong, or we were just lucky.
If the oil pressure is better when the oil is thick, it is not the screen. Think about it. The oil would go through a clogged screen easier when warm and thin. Usually, when the oil pressure is low when the engine is warm, the bearings are worn out.
