So today out of nowhere the truck starts acting up with the steering. It got tuff to turn the wheel and then would "release" and steer ok.
I drained the fluid (brownish and stinky) and added new.......
Crawled under the truck and the rack was damp....... The old fluid (likely original with 120k) had small metallic piec s in it.......
Is the rack toast? Or shall I look somewhere else too?
It sounds to me like the rack is likely due for replacement, along with a flush of the power steering fluid.
Was the power steering pump making any strange noises just prior to or during this steering issue? It's also possible the pump could be the issue. But since the rack is wet and you don't mention the pump leaking, I'd start with the rack.
nice clean oil with no CRUD floating around in it makes things move and slide a lot better... not saying it will FIX it, but should really help operation and jerking.
we had one at work that made a lot on noise also... I drained it out and added a "synthetic steering fluid" instead of auto transmission fluid... that seemed to help.
I just sucked out as much as possible with a rose gun.... refilled and run full left- right several times to pump oil around and go over relief and wash things off..... suck out again with the suction gun- refill - run left right again.... I used up 3 quarts of oil doing this 5-6 times.
