tough steering

Hi all,
well... another issue with my very used 97 mountaineer (V8 AWD 205k).... it started a while back that the steering seemed a little more stiff than usual but after a day or so it would return to normal... now it is pretty stiff all the time.

Power steering pump? It looked like there was some fluid around it when I bought it a few years back, but in all this time (30k miles) it has not lost any fluid... so I am not sure. Any other components I should be looking at?

If it was the power steering causing me grief... how easy might it be to just make it "non-power" steering? I will try to look over the shop manuals I have and see what it says there as well, but I thought I might ask here as well.

thanks
-John B

It could be a bad pump even though it's not leaking.

65 bucks (pump), 15 bucks (space heater).... 2 days (too cold for just one day of work) and the power steering pump has been replaced. Steering works well again... thanks MA Rag Top.
