Seems to me that I remember someone removed his IPR with one of those shower-faucet sockets that come in a set held together by a huge bobby-pin-lookin' clip.
I've used that kind of "socket" many times and I think I've posted about it before. I'm pretty sure I've seen other guys post the same thing too, so it might be a few of us.
Sorry, two more questions: 1. Looking at the front of the HPOP, I see no gears or anything to mate up with the engine and turn the pump. Sticking my finger in the hole on the front of the engine where the 18mm bolt came out, I can feel something with a round hole in it and loose which kind of scares me because it feels like it could fall down if I wasn't careful. It "feels" as if whatever it is, might fit over the round protrusion on the front of the pump. So would I be correct is assuming that it won't fall out as I am pushing the pump back in, and that it does indeed go over the front protrusion on the pump and that the friction of the 18mm bolt torqued to 95lbs is sufficient to turn the pump?
2. I saw somewhere that is was recommended that you use some kind of (un-named) sealant to secure the HPOP front plate gasket to the pump and let it harden before you try to replace the pump. That would keep the gasket from moving when you are putting the pump back in. Does anyone know what type of sealant that would be?
1. That is correct. There is nothing wrong with your pump. That "loose" thing is the gear that the pump bolts to (the 18MM bolt). It will not fall in. It is sitting on top of more gears. Your assumptions are correct. The only thing you have to worry about is dropping the spacer off the bolt as you are trying to thread it into the pump (through the gear). If it falls you will have to unbolt the cover on the HPOP reservoir and fish it out. You have to be careful as some of the bolts on top are just for the cover and some are for the reservoir itself. You can just unbolt the reservoir to make retrieval easier but if you have not sucked the oil out of the reservoir it will be really, really messy.
2. I use a couple of dollops of grey Permatex gasket maker to tack the HPOP gasket in place. There is enough metal surface area that you can put a couple dabs of Permatex without fouling the rubber gasket. Let it dry for 10 min or so then it gives you a better shot at lining up the pump and getting the mounting bolts started without damaging the gasket.
The last thing you want to do is finish the job, fire it back up after getting it all back together, and having a leak to go back and do it all over again.
