These appear to be Bob Jones special trucks. Bob Jones Skyland Ford in Denver Colorado prepared these trucks when new. Article in December 1956 hot rod magazine

So, why does he have the big rim on the front? Extra weight? Although, if he needed weight in the front, I would think you could get steel bars or something that wouldn't block air flow to the radiator.
There are lots of holes in the rim, but still it alters the flow.

Looks to be a dirt track racer, so it is probably protection for the radiator and possibly act as a push bar also

I wonder why allot of those early trucks used a chain drive to the wheels . They obviously had a way to get the drive turned ninety degrees . would it have been a drive ratio issue ?

More gear reduction, possibly. That is what was “always” done.......until someone had a “better idea”! There were also chain drive farm tractors clear into the 1960’s; although the chains were enclosed in the transmission / differential housings and ran in gear - chain lube.

Seen on trucks and early large engine cars before the days of strong u joints (like Spicer) to take the loads.

Wow....absolutely great photos!....... obviously that's the absolute best time in American history....... when people could have different opinions and still like each other..... you could go into a restaurant and relax and eat a meal.... you could walk into a bank..... you could shop and look at something instead of imagining it with a online picture..... and most of all cars and trucks had style and personality...... sometimes technology is always a good thing.....
