We are not clairvoyant...

You're forgetting to provide pertinent information like what engine it would be mounted to... and whether you know the "E" in E40D means electronic. Meaning, it would need, among other things, a controller and software.

AOD and an E4OD are 2 different trannies. There is no e4aod. There is no specific write up on putting an OD tranny in a dent. Just need to search, read and learn. The AOD is a mechanical overdrive tranny and has a very particular linkage that needs hooked up and adjusted correctly or it will not work.

An E4OD is electronic and needs a controller and some sensors on the engine.

They are longer and bigger around than a c6. Drive shaft will need shortened. You also have a problem with speedometer. gear driven was not used much on these, but may have a spot and internals for a mechanical speedo.

It has been done, and there are a few articles on it out there, but a good detailed right up is not available that I have seen yet.

I just got a 74 f100 no motor or trans.....I'm looking for something to make this a daily driver I'd like it to be high geared or have over drive ......and motor wise I was thinking 302 or 351.....the truck originally came with a 390 auto

Well, then look for a mid to late 80's 302 or 351 with the AOD. This way it will have the proper linkage and no electronics. Should be still carbed. If you can find a donor truck, the better. If you find one that has same wheelbase and drive, 2wd or 4wd, then you should have everything needed for the swap, including motor mounts, crossmembers, drive shaft. and so on. That is what I would do anyway.

Alternatively you can go to an AODE (upgraded and Elec shift AOD) or a 4R70W (upgraded AODE) that will bolt behind a 302 or 351W. In fact both were offered in the F and E-series behind the the 302 and 351W and the 4.6L and 5.4L

The AOD AODE 4R70W and the 4R75W are derived from the the old FX/MX/FMX transmissions.

The E4OD (AKA 4R100) is derived from the C6.

After market shift controllers are available for both and just require the addition of a TPS (throttle position sensor) Most of the shift controller kits can be had with an add on TPS set up for a carb.

Personally I would opt for the 4R70W there is far more aftermarket support (Stand alone controllers, shift kits, upgrades ect) for the AOD family of transmissions than there are for the E4OD (4R100).

The 4R70W Will be adequate unless you are planning on doing lots and lots of heavy towing.

Hope this helps
