Transmission swap

I have a 94 F 150xlt 4x4 4wd w/5.8L and a E4OD tranny. Tranny giving problems and someone is willing to give me their 1990 f 150 Automatic V-8 that has engine problems. Can anyone give an idea of what I need to look for to match give away truck with mine. I suspect to match tranny I need to make sure I count 18 bolts on both. Do I need to make sure it is a 5.8L as well. Any other hints would be helpful!

What automatic is in the 1990? If it's an AOD, they were never made to go behind a 351. Too much torque. If it's a C6, your gas mileage will suffer badly because there's no overdrive. It's a very reliable tranny, though. If it's an E4OD, you're lucky it's still working, being that old. The older E4OD's were problematic.

If you're switching to a different tranny, you need to swap computers as well. I do not think that a 302 computer will work on a 351 - you didn't say what motor the 1990 has, either.

Thanks andym the tranny didn't match up. It was an older aod and the high mileage made me think more about searching for a rebuilt E4od instead. thanks for your reply.

Rebuilt tranny

Do a search under "remanufactured e4od" and look for Jasper engines, as in
Nascar #77 Jasper. compare prices and warranty vs a rebuild .

just thought i'd add my .02cents. i have to disagree with the above the aod is a very capable trans. i've personally ran one with nearly 550 rear wheel hp. it wasn't stock tho. hardened 1pc input, aftermkt vb ect. with some minor mods it's quite capable of handling 300 or so hp no problem. the biggest issue with the aod is the detent cable. if not set correctly will cause premature failure. a quality shift kit will work wonders.
