this might be a very silly question, but...
is it possible to replace my tired E4OD (220000km) with an AOD? Among wanting to do a MAF conversion, I have an AOD from another F150. I assume the AODs that came in trucks are different than those that came in Mustangs. Thanks in advance for any replies.
the E4OD tranny is controlled by your ECU and the AOD isn't. Your ECU might have fits if it's trying to run a tranny that isn't there. So you'll have 2 choices. 1) chip burnt to eliminate tranny 2)different ECU
I think the only difference between car and truck AOD's is the tail shaft length (about 1" longer in trucks, and lincolns). The AOD is about 3" shorter than the C6, which I believe is shorter than the E4OD (therefore, driveshaft mod). I have read that the E4OD is an outgrowth of the C6, and I assume is equally heavy duty.
I got an AOD from a Cougar to replace my C6 to save gas. Once I took a look inside the AOD and saw how weak it looked compared to the C6, I decided not to do the swap. The input and output shafts are much larger on the C6.
I think you would come out ahead to fix the E4OD with all of the latest Ford mods.
They do offer seriously hi-performance AOD's but the cost is seriously high, and the C6 was the basis for the E4OD and a lot of parts interchange between them.
If you have the cash, I would say go with a short shaft C6 with a gear vendor OD and have 7 forward speeds (GV+3rd, or 3rd high, is the same ratio as std 4th which is OD) and 2 reverse.
thanks for the quick response, i guess i'll ditch the aod idea, just the e4od also seems to be the biggest hurdle in a MAF conversion, thanks again for the info
