'53 F100 -e40d?

I have a '53 F100 with a highly modified 400 motor. It presently has a C6 with a shift kit and a high stall convertor. One of the engine mods is an EFI setup using an EEC-IV computer. I would like to get an OD tranny to keep my RPM's down on the highway. I believe that an E40D will fit the big block bell housing bolt pattern on the 400 motor. I can swap the computer to one that supports an OD tranny.

Lentech sugested an AOD with an adapter.

Does anyone know any reason that I shouldn't use a good rebuilt E40D without an adapter?

I think the E4OD would work much better than an AOD. The advantage of the AOD is that they don't have electronic controls. The advantage of the E4OD is that they are much stronger and shift much better than an AOD.

That's what I thought. I will have to research the electronic controls, but an EEC-IV should be OK for the right tranny.

How about size? How much bigger than a C6 is an E40D? Is an AOD a lot smaller?

The E4OD is larger than a C6, and quite a bit larger than an AOD. The AOD is a very compact four speed trans.

Another possiblility is from Baumann Engineering. They make a stand alone controller for the E4OD.

I sent an email to Baumann Engineering, but have yet to hear from them.

Normally the E40D is controlled by the engine controller, corrrect?

I have an EEC-IV Mass air ECU. The 460 EFI motors were all speed density engine controllers. My controller is for a 5.0L, and would be an AOD tranny. I does have some transmission controls available. With my C6, I don't use any. In fact the A3M strategy is for a 5 speed tranny. I can easily switch to an A9P strategy, but that is for an AOD in a Mustang.

The Lentech solution is probably an easier swap. Their AOD is beefed up. The E40D will be cheaper, but more work.

It is the size that worries me most. The truck is all built, and I don't want to tear things up to swap trannies.

A computer that ran an AOD isn't going to be able to run an E4OD. They are too different for that to work.

The E4OD is quite a bit larger than an AOD. It could be a problem for you.

Did you go with the E4OD? I'm looking to swap out my C6 with Gear VEndors OD for an E4OD, but I'm looking for the electronics. What did you eventually work out? Any advice for me?

I stayed with my C6, because from what I could determine the E40D would required significant modification of my floor pan, and since the truck is near completion, I didn't want to tear things apart.

The Lentech AOD with adapter looks good, but the price tag is too high.

I looked at the Gear Vendors option, and aside from the price, I think that the drive shaft will be too short and cause U-Joint problems.

With a 3.25:1 rear axle ratio, and 295R50s, I can cruise at 70 MPH at 3000 RPM. That isn't too bad, although with OD it would be lower.

Why are you getting rid of the Gear Vendors unit?

Gear Vendors

I found a rebuilt E4OD and converter for $1200 locally. If I go with that, I'll post the Gear Vendors unit up for sale. It's malfunctioning, but I just learned today that it might be the speed sensor causing the drop in and out of OD.

Everyone I speak to says to keep the C6. I'm a little confused right now...

Thanks for the reply.

I'm putting the E4OD into a 1987 F250, 6.9 Liter...but, again, everyone I speak to says keep the C6 because it's so strong. Gear VEndors wants $900 to rebuild my overdrive unit, and I would have to ship it, leaving my truck useless in the meanwhile.
Is $1200 a fair price for a rebuilt Diesel E4OD with Converter? $500 for the Baumannator ECU, and I'm in $1700 before I even touch the driveshaft...I paid $1600 for the truck!

I priced a used E40D from a salvage yard for a lot less. You will need to keep the truck and the E40D running for quite a while to break even over keeping the C6, even at current fuel prices.
