Ok so I have a 77 f250 and it has a 460 swapped in it.and it does have a manual fuel pump on it.now my problem is I need a gas tank since it never had one since I bought it and every gas tank I find for that year truck has a sending unit cut out on it.now my question is do I need a sending unit if I have the manual pump and if not what gas tank do I need to get?thanks
Ok thanks man I wasn't sure.I used to have a 69 Broncos when I was a kid and I only remember it having a 3/8 inch petcock and it has the same style fuel pump but that was years ago so I can't really recall
Welcome to FTE, lots of good, knowledgeable people here.
On the fuel tank, all tanks have the fuel sender cutout and yes you will need it because the sender also contains the fuel pickup and strainer. That's where you hook the fuel line up to. Without it, you won't have any place to connect the fuel line.
One other thing you will need to know. There are two different aft-axle tanks for these trucks. They're usually listed as with or without emissions hole. What that is, is some trucks came with evaporative emissions systems and some came without the system.
Systems with evapoartive emissions have a hole in the center top of the fuel tank for a check valve to fit. Systems without didn't have the hole.
To know whether your truck has evap emissions, look for a charcoal canister bolted to the passenger frame rail in the engine compartment. There will also be a 5/16" hardline running along the passenger frame rail from the canister back to the fuel tank.
Here's a tank with the emissions check valve and a close up of the fuel sender.
