I understand your concern....but... they have been putting fuel pumps and sending units in tanks for sometime now with little to no problems. Other than it harder to change.
I'm sure it can be done, but you might have rewire the gauge so that it would still work & those wires would still be in the tank. Also you would probably have to open the tank up and remove the old pump and install a hose to the pickup sock. So the old pump wouldn't create too much restriction. Granted the sending unit that registers how full/empty the tank is doesn't require as much power as the OEM pump, but still there is still power there.
If your wires are getting hot/ warming up going to your current fuel pump in the factory location then I'd say you have a problem with the pump or wiring going to it.
The float / fuel level controller works electrically also... Been inside the tank FOREVER... I had a 1989 F250 with fuel pump in the tank... that was 30 years ago.
