install a 7.3 idi engine?

Hi, im new to the forum. this is actually my first post. i have bought a 1991 f250 4x4 7.3IDI automatic. 77,000 miles. its brown with tan 2 tone. not the most desirable color but whatever. i got it for 500$ with 2 engines. 1 engine was blown, rebuilt and had no compression after. the other is a 100% complete motor with all the belts on and fan. the flywheel is not on either engine but i have it laying in my garage. what will the steps be to put the engine back in? and i will probably end up taking the hood off and taking the 2 front tires off so its lower to the ground. thanks in advance

Don't worry about taking the front wheels off. You'll need the clearance for the legs on your engine hoist.

If you don't already have one, get a 2-ton engine hoist. You'll need the extra strength, these motors are heavy.

You will need to remove the radiator(but not the AC radiator; it can stay) to get the old engine out, along with the water pump pulley and harmonic balancer(so you'll need a bolt-style puller). You will also need to remove the oil filter before trying to lift it; there's just not that much clearance.

Other than that, it's just a matter of disconnecting all the various bolts, wiggling things loose and pulling.

BTW, chances are your 77K mile truck probably has 177, 277 or 377k at this point; remember that the odometer rolls over after 99,999 miles.

yes im aware that the odometer rolls back to 0 after 100,000 miles but i know the previous owner personally and i know the whole story of the truck. it pulled a cattle trailer until the motor blew which was at 77,000 miles. but there is no motor currently in the truck. all i have to do is install the good engine that came with the truck. the rad is already out. can somebody tell me how to put the flywheel on the engine? not too sure how to do that. but i will make sure to take the oil filter off the engine before dropping it in. im hoping all the bolts for the flywheel and bell housing and motor mounts are in the center console.

Auto transmission - in your case should be an E4OD due to it being a 91. It should have an electronic regulator module which mounts to the side of the injection pump and provides throttle position.
I'm sure it also has lines which go to a radiator cooler of some sort; I've only got manual transmissions in my trucks so I'm not sure.

Installing flywheel... If it's an automatic, it should have a flex plate instead of a true "flywheel". Either way, it should just bolt to the rear end of the crank shaft with like 8-10 bolts. There's a 1/2" or so "pin" sticking out of where it bolts to which should line up with a hole on the back side of the flex plate which aligns the holes correctly.

Fly wheel will only go on one way. Clean your bolts then coat the threads with thread sealer very important thread sealer. This so it doesn't leak oil out the threads. Torque to 35 ft lb's. Did you get the flywheel bolts. They are grade 8 bolts.

I'm curious- how did the engine blow at 77000 miles? These engines aren't even broke in at 77000 miles. Did someone forget to add oil?

the truck was ran really hard by enployees that didnt care about the well being of the truck. thats how it blew at 77,000. im gonna have to end up buying all new bolts for the bell housing and flex plate. any ideas where i can get them at? (trying to avoid the ford dealership)

Just figure out what thread they are, and then buy grade 8 bolts of the right length and size.

I'm pretty sure the flywheel bolts are going to be SAE, while the flex plate bolts, being a Ford transmission, will be metric.
