I was just looking for some information about pulling the engine away from the transmission. I'm rebuilding my 300, everything is all ready, unbolted, and the engine is chained to the hoise, but I can't seem to get the engine to pull away from the transmission. Is there something I need to know before I break something?
The very first thing to do is too properly jack up and support the transmission. You should employ a jack, or blocks and wedges that allow you to adjust the heigth of the transmission from the ground.
Verify six large bolts are removed from bell housing. Verify starter is removed from engine and transmission. Verify you have removed the tourque converter inspection cover and removed the four (or more) tourqe converter to flywheel nuts. You have to rotate the tourque converter to see them all.
Now lift engine just a hair off the motor mounts. Just a teeny bit! Resupport transmission again, so that the weight of the transmission and engine are just balanced. Neither should be forcing leverage on the other.
Now use a large prybar and push the engine and transmission apart. Do not drive a wedge between the engine and transmission as you will have to repair that surface later. You should be able to find a spot where you can cantiliver the transmission away from the engine, on external mounting points.
If the engine and transmission have never been separated before it takes a fair amount of prying to break them apart, but not excessive force either.
