Hello guys... I have a 1979 f150 custom 4x4 with a 351m and I've noticed a small leak of coolant under my passenger dash with which looks to be like coolant. The box it's leaking from is completely riveted on so I can not take it apart I was wondering if there is some kind of connecting bolts on the outside firewall as I've seen a few misplaced bolts if you guys have any info I'd gladly use it thanks for your time and help here is a few pictures of what I'm dealing with to help you guys get a better picture
If it is a truck w/no a/c then it is relatively easy job. There are I think 3 studs through the firewall that holds the whole heater box on.Remove them both heater hoses and 1 electrical connection underhood, and 1 cable retainer under the dash and it comes right out. If however it has factory a/c you should drink about a case of beer, cuss out your boss, beat your wife, shoot your best hunting dog, go to the local Mexican food place and eat a week old burrito, dial 911 and threaten to kill all the local police. Then you will be ready to tackle the heater core.
Without way easier, just locate the studs holding the blower motor, buy you still have to remove the complete case up under the dash and open it up to get to the heater core.
On a non ac truck like yours you remove the heater hoses under the hood, unplug the blower motor. Next go under the dash and remove the two door control cables and unplug the blower resistor. Also unbolt the passenger floorboard cowl vent duct. Then back under the hood you remove the three nuts that hold the box in, one above and below the blower motor, and one under the heater hoses. After that you can pull the box away from the firewall and roll it down and out.
Once it's on the ground you can flip it over and remove the plate that's bolted on the firewall side that covers the core. There are two versions, a standard and a high output heat core. If you measure the old one you can figure out what you have. The high output version is a few inches longer.
It seems to be un attached I've followed your guys direction but it's still getting held up on one of the hooks for the cable that's closest to the driver side the blower motor and heater core are free along with the one stud but the clips metal bar is hung up on the dash any tips or tricks to free it up ?
You might try removing the lower right dash bolt near the kick panel then you can pull the bottom of the dash out slightly, may be just enough to get it out. That or maybe pull the carpet back. My truck has just a bare metal floor and I was able to sneak it out.
Also, take advantage of this time to clean the heater box out. Leaves will often enter and can cause a big ole fire. You can also get a heater core at Oreilly's for 24 dollars.
