I am trying to trouble shoot a problem that I am having, before I got out and buy some new parts.
My problem is simple, when the heater is on, coolant leaks onto my passanger side floor mat.
I have traced this problem, and originnaly I thought it was the coolant hose going into the heater core, so i replaced that and the problem seemed to fix itself but not it is back.
I think I might have a bad heater core, and was wondering if anybody has taken one of these out, and how big of a deal is it? Also, how bad are the fumes of coolant. Sometimes when the heater comes on, some fumes will blow out for a few seconds, which I think is coolant that is evaporating from the heater core.
If anybody has any suggestions or comments please let me know.
If replacement is the same as an 84,it is pretty easy,if you don`t have AC.First partially drain the cooling system.Remove the heater hoses from the core.Remove the control cable that controls the flapper door in the core box in the engine compartment.Remove the box. There are(iirc)4 or 5 bolts around the box holding it to the firewall. One is way down low on the right side of the box.
A long extension and universal joint with a socket will be needed to get that one out. Before starting soak the bolts liberally with the penetrating oil of your choice, starting the day before.Good luck.Have fun.

A/c is easier. Take out your glove box, and behind it is an access panel, the core comes out that way. 1/2 to 1 hour job, one of the easier cores to replace I have encountered.
