Angry 1998 3.0 cam Pos sensor...

Hello,
I'm putting a new crankshaft in my girlfriends 1998 ranger 3.0 v6 4x4.
The reason for this is that the gear on the camshaft synchro shaft (Oil pump drive unit) was destroyed by the camshaft gear.

I bought a new synchro, and bearings, and had the crank fixxed,.
When I went to install the new synchro, I found out that i needed A "Special" Tool. so I bought that too.

This tool is supposed to properly align the tab on the synchro with the cam position sensor. But there aren't any very good instructions on doing this.
So my question is When #1 is TDC on the Compression stroke, Where is the tab on the synchro supposed to be located?
Is it supposed to be located by the pick-up on the sensor?

Or is supposed to be about 180 deg form the pick up?

I could send Pictures if that would help.

Well, thanks in advance,
Brian

Hi Brian, welcome to FTE!

I've never done the CPS synchronizer replacement before, but it looks like the Haynes Manual has a decent description of the procedure. There are diagrams included, so if you get stuck, you should probably pick up a copy of the Manual. This is what it says to do:

(1) Fit the tool together with the syncronizer first;

(2) Insert the gear assembly part of the synchronizer back into the engine with the tool pointing aprrox. 75 degrees counter-clockwise from the engine's centerline;

(3) Turn the tool just a little clockwise so the synchronizer engages with the oil pump intermediate shaft. Then gently push down on the synchronizer turning the tool until the gear on the synchronizer engages with the gear on the camshaft;

(4) When fully inserted, the head of the tool should be pointing toward the rear of the engine, approx. 33-45 degrees counter-clockwise from the centerline of the engine.

Note: The engine's "centerline" is an imaginary line that runs straight down the middle of the engine, front to back.

Hope this helps...good luck!

Note: The Ford Cam Sensor Synch Tool looks like this:

Actually I have the Haynes book.
My problem is when the synchronizer and the tool are assembled, the shaft will still turn about 180 degrees. So I don't know Which side of the stop on to tool the tab should be on...
The instructions in the haynes book seem pretty thorough, until you have the parts in your hands...then its another story....

I dont know if this makes any sense...Its confusing the heck out of me......

Nothing is ever as easy as Haynes says it is, huh Brian?

Anyone else out there ever done this before? Is there some kind of trick involved? Please post.
