My dealer was trying to tell me that my synchros went because I rest my hand on the 5spd stick, when I drive. I thought the synchros were only used when shifting.
What you're doing if forcing the shift yoke against the spinning/engaged gear, and the synchro is in the middle. Without the synchro, every gear would grind like 1st/granny gear. The synchro acts like a brake to slow the free gear to match the speed of the power gear. When the two gears speed are sycronized(thus the name),their teeth mesh quitely. I have an auto in my truck, but I am sure the dealer is actually right on this one. May have to get an armrest in the truck to prevent this premature wear. Hope the repair cost is reasonable. Good luck.
That doesn't change the fact that I, in fact, do not rest my hand on the stick. My dealer said mine was far from the only one they have swapped out synchros on.
Yes, resting your hand on the stick does cause the problems you mention, but it seems to be a different problem..
Well,in that case,I would suspect a lubrication problem based on premature failure. The synchros are wearable but rely on lubrication to limit the wear. They get almost all of their wear during a shift - when friction is highest. If they are engaging nearly dry, that will eat them up quick.I wonder what manual trans the 450 & 550 get? They have to be failing at a higher rate.Good luck.
