The government rating requirement specs are totally different between ST and LT tires as well as the conditions under which the specs have to be meant.
^^^ Exactly correct.
Any good quality LT tire 235/85/16 E rated will be rated at 3040lbs load range. Thats with a light truck DOT rating system. So that gives you 18,000 capacity, way over your 16,000. Then subtract your 2500+lbs pin weight, and you are fine with LT tires. Not that they will be overloaded but I'd rather have a way overloaded LT tire than a under-loaded ST tire any day.
More than enough for triple axle 16,000lb FW. As jonrjen said, comparing ST tire ratings with LT tire ratings is like comparing apples to peas...
Most of the 16" rims on FW that take the st e/d load tire are not rated for 110psi that the g rated goodyears or S637's need. The max psi is stamped on the inside of the rim. not saying they couldn't handle more psi, but probably not a good idea to go over the rated psi of the rim. Although never seen a rim blow out or fail..? Both those G rated tires are very good tires also. Just probably need new rims to use them (safely..?).
I've run run the Comp ta LT E load tire and it worked flawlessly for me. Got the Michelin 235/85/16 E XPS ribs for years now on my 15,000lbs TH, they work great.
Probably a good idea to replace any trailer tire between 4-5 years old no matter how good it looks. My ribs are coming up on 5 years and look great, hate to take them off. But hate blowouts a lot more.
Seen more TH blowouts coming into Glamis than I can count. The damage to the TH from a high speed ST type blowout can be extensive, taking out fender wells, side skirts, floors, plumbing, electrical, etc... Not saying LT tires never blow out on heavy TH or FW, but its rare compared to ST tires.
Go on most any TH forum and you can see most with heavy TH have solved their blowout problem by going to LT tires after multiple ST blowouts. Many trailer forums call e/d st tires 'China Bombs'. Although there are a few that have no problem with ST tires. i wasn't one of those few. But have had no more tire problems since going to LT tires...
If they work on my my WW fsw 3200+TH, 15,000lbs, would say the difference in a bigger FW pin to a TT compared too a lighter weight pin probably makes our trailers similar weight on the axles/tires. Most 16"rimmed triples have plenty of room for the slightly taller LT 235/85/16E tire as you can see below...
