I'm in the process of removing my turbo for a rebuild and the front driver side pedestal bolt is almost rounded off... The 10mm swivel socket is slipping. Any help would be much appreciated!
Don't know what you have done to remove it. When I did mine if you remove the the three bolts on the exhaust side of the turbo, the coupler to down pipe then push it forward, towards the firewall. That will give you much more room for the bolt to be exposed and get a good grip on it.
I have all four of the bolts/nuts off of where the Y for the uppipes connects off, and what I thought was two of the pedestal bolts but I'm not so sure now... The front passenger driver pedestal bolt and now the rear passenger pedestal bolt are rounded off... (I hadthe wrench on it and was pulling and it came loose, or so I thought, but as I kept working on it it just felt like it was slipping and when I got a flashlight and looked it appears to have rounded off).
Here is what has me wondering about the rear driver pedestal bolt: I reached back in there and felt a big nut and took this picture with my phone to see what it was.
Did you PB blaster or a good penetrating oil prior? It helps a lot and even better when applied hot as when I cools the oil gets sucked in.
Yes, I have sprayed it with PB blaster twice in the past week and then this morning. It must have helped because most of the bolts came off fairly easy. The uppipe bolts were really rusted and they came right off.
I've had a problem with stubborn bolts on this truck before. The banjo bolt on the fuel pump wouldn't come off even after I soaked the whole pump overnight in some stuff I got at the autoparts store (I can't remember the name of it right now, they said it should eat anything off). In the end I put it in a vice (that wasn't mounted to anything), stood on it, and used a hammer on the 1 1/4" wrench to get it off.
Adam, do you get a commission whenever you sell someone on the mod, lol?
I strongly advise against using a cutting torch! If you have to use a cutoff wheel or saws all on the pedestal to get the turbo our of the way so you use other methods on the bolt. Torches cause truck fires. Many photos on the internet.
I wish Phil, just helping out because I know how frustrating it was to remove that turbo and I knew that was not going to be the only time I was removing the dam thing.
