OK, whatever, something like that... but I saw the two dots lined up like that and noticed that's wrong but people sometimes offset the ignition distributor to deal with it, time the engine on whatever cylinder happens to be TDC on the compression stroke in that orientation.

He's not actually flipping the dots, he is just putting it back like it was, he could get lucky if nothing moved ... Personally, I would not take the chance, it's not worth the possible out come.

These older type Ford engines are not interference engines. The valves can open at any time and not kiss the pistons.

If he turned the engine around with the old gears till the dots lined up like his picture, took the gears off without turning anything, and put the new gears back on without turning anything and the dots lined up like the old set, he will probably be ok.

If he turned the cam or the crank at any time after the old gears were taken off and before the new ones where installed, he might be in trouble.

Thank you sir, That is exactly what I didn't know ...
I suspected it, just didn't want to allow him to crash it if zero clearance. Better safe than sorry!

So, knowing that, all he needed to do was ensure #1 at TDC, Roll the cam to face to face dots ...

Not that it matters now, but the next reader may like to know that!

This is a four stroke engine.
The crank gear *must* make exactly two revolutions for one of the cam gear.

So, *every other* crank revolution is going to be tdc compression #1.

Count the teeth or measure the circumferences of your old timing gears and you will know how it works
