The tappet cover on the side of the block on my '76 300-c leaks oil. I checked the bolts the other day and found most of them really loose. I tightened them up, but only one (2nd from the front) really tightened down like it was coming up against something, like a bolt tightening down against a casting feels. The rest of them got slowly tighter, but never tightened down firmly like #2 did. Are these supposed to bottom out against something, with the flex of the cover providing the sealing force, or do they not get very tight? I'm hesitant to tighten them down too tightly since I'm afraid of warping the cover and making it leak worse, like can happen to an oil pan. Any suggestions?
I guess I'm concerned that only one has gotten to 'snug'. Is there something that these bolts bottom out on or tighten up against inside, or do they just warp the cover plate farther and farther the more you turn them in? I'm just trying to keep from warping the cover and making it worse.
But do the bolts and cover tighten down against something inside (like a threaded boss), or just keep bending the cover in farther and farther the more you tighten them?
