This is for future reference if anyone else has this similar issue.
Truck is driving great and all of a sudden she starts stuttering and shaking when in reverse. My heart sinks and I fear a trans issue. Drive her a few more days just to see if it "works it self out" or if I notice any other gears acting funny.
Notice a clunk going on below the floorboards that I could feel with my feet . At this point I say no way is whole truck just rattling apart. Get home after work. Pull the tire off and to my amazement the caliper mounting bolt is missing.
I am thrilled to see this! I noticed the caliper was making contact with the wheel. Upon further inspection it appears that when rotating forward it would make smooth contact. However in reverse the wheel was catching a rough edge causing the stuttering and shaking. Fetch a new bolt, crank her down, tire back on and once again everything is right in the world and I have my happiness back.
There was a time we could go to a parts house and tell the guys behind the counter what syptoms we were having and the could almost always tell us what was wrong and the parts we needed to fix it.
Those were the days!
Those days are gone with all these new cars. So many electronics. The 7.3 can be difficult to diagnose but that's why we have FTE and the awesome guys on this forum.
A few years back we had a guy that experienced the same issue. About a year later the rim with the grove in it came apart at highway speed with his camper loaded in the bed. I remember the pics, the aluminum rim separated like it had been cut on a lathe and left the vehicle with the inner part of the wheel still bolted to the hub.
