i have '87 F150 that originally had a 300 I6. replacing it with a rebuilt '72 351C, new converter with 31spine, 11-.5 bolt circle and 1.375 pilot. New flex[late to match. C6 is original truck with 30 / 31 input shaft. All goes together except that there is about a 1/4 inch gap between the bellhousing and block face it bottoms out .Up to this point every thing slides together. Engine and tranny are out of the truck. Are there different lengths of input shafts or anything else that does not transfer form 300 i6 t0 351c ? .This is a light duty application just a collection of parts in the shop for a fun ride. Appreciate any suggestions or advice. Thanks
Did you turn the trans so that the bellhousing was up, insert the converter, and spin the converter until it dropped into place? The front face of the converter must be inside the front face of the bellhousing.
Hey Mark
Yes i fitted the converter to the trany before assy. all seemed ok . Measured the stack up of the converter mount face to the bellhousing and compared it to the stack up of the flexplate to the block, I have clearance for it all to mate but no luck.

I test fitted the new converter, as well as the old one Off the 300 I6 that is original with the trany, to the flexplate on the engine. All seems ok .I assembled the trany to the block with the old flexplate and converter and had the same mate up problem. The problem seems that ether the input shaft or the pump shaft bottoms out, at this point my knowledge of parts and optional parts is done. I was wondering if input shaft or pumpshaft length have options for different applications. These parts are from 300I6 , are they different for 351C ?
thanks for the reply.
Yes sir, thanks for the exploded assy pic. Going to check my dimensions this evening to make sure i've made no errors. But this is not my first rodeo and am more than willing to admit to a mistake but this seems so simple , but I don't get it yet. Thanks for the input.
Hey guys solved the problem of the C6 to 351 assembly. I got another C6 and everything went together as it should with all combinations of torque converters and flexplates. So upon inspection of the original and working when removed C6 it has a damaged front pump that will not allow the converter to fully engage. I have no idea how this got damaged as it sat on the bench whilst the 351 was built. The original converter was initially tried with the original flexplate, so looking for evil elves in the shop now. Thanks for the help guys
