Hi I'm new here just purchased a 69 F100 that needed a tranny, I got one and went to put it in today bolting it up and a loud pop and the bell housing got a nice size crack in it. Is there a way to fix the crack such as a very good application of bondo/JB Weld? The crack is on the driver side so does not affect the starter. Also something bound up and I can not turn the motor from the crank. Please give me some input.
Uh oh!! Sounds like you didn't have the converter in all the way. Shove the tranny back so you can get you hand in and rotate the converter until it slides farther back. You shouldn't be able to get your fingers in between the bell housing and converter when it is in properly. Either find another C6, a good aluminum welder or cross your fingers and hope the JBWeld holds.
Also check and make sure converter is correct. Could be wrong input to fit into crankshaft? That sucks. Also like mentioned before is spin converter and make sure it all the way into transmission. Spin and push should feel drop into tranny. Also once you get tranny flush your converter should be about 1/8 or a little more from flex plate on back of engine. If more than that might need to shim up. If its solid against flex something is wrong and need to investigate further. Did the truck have a manual transmission before? Make sure nothing in back or crankshaft. Also might need to check for burr and later scuff out crankshaft where converter fits. Good luck and keep us updated.
You have to have the bolt holes in the flexplate lined up with the studs on the torque converter when you install it the bolts have to be in the holes and the converter free or you will screw up the front pump and in extreme cases break the housing.
Always make sure the converter will rock back and forth freely in the holes while you are tightening the tranny, and don't tighten just one side at a time.
JB isn't going to help here.
